Search engine optimisation is a method or process of “optimising” web pages so that they are found on search engines. There are two types of optimisation:
- Onpage optimisation
- Offpage optimisation
Onpage search engine optimisation defined
This is all the bits and pieces that are changed in the code and text of a web pages and are performed “on the page” – hence the term “onpage optimisation”.
Search Engines have rules and criteria for a web page to be listed in their search results. The rules and criteria are determined by something called an “algorithim”. If the web page meets all these criteria then it will be listed in their results. Sound simple? Yes and no. Onpage optimisation consists of the following:
- page title
- meta description
- meta keywords (not on all search engines)
- keyword density
- h tags
- links
- good relevant content
These are all coded into the web page itself and are thus “onpage” optimised.
Offpage search engine optimisation defined
Offpage optimisation in a nutshell is link building. The fundamentals are the same but there are many different ways to obtain links. Basically the more links* to your site the better and this scores points with search engines.
Different methods for obtaining links are as follows:
Search engine optimisation is a combination of the above and whilst the objective is to get your website at the top of the rankings it’s no use if your website isn’t converting visitors to sales. This is known as website optimisation and that’s explained on our SEO website.
*CAUTION: Link building can have very dramatic and adverse effects. Typical examples include free for all link building programs and link farms. These can and will get your site banned from the search engines. For example: Say you are a plumbing company and you have say 20 links to your site from other plumbing companies then this is generally a good thing in the eyes of the search engines. If however, you buy into a link program and suddenly get 2000 links from insurance companies then this is bad. It is considered spam. So just don’t do it.
